How do I?

Change a set of results to be a percentage?

Often exams and assessments tasks are marked out of totals that are not percentages, i.e. not out of 100. Sometimes it is convenient to have the results as a percentage.

For example, in a simple case, if an exam is out of 20 the results are multiplied by 5 to make them out of 100. More commonly the raw scores are out of number that is not a multiple of 10 and the multiplying factor is not a whole number.

SM-Marks Online handles such operations with the Linear Scale calculation. As with all calculations, a task must be created to store the results that are converted to the percentage.

  1. Choose the New|Task command.
  2. Click on the Task name field.
  3. Enter the task name.
  4. Enter a task maximum of 100.
  5. Click the Create Task button.
  6. Choose the Edit|Calculation command.
  7. Select Linear Scale in the Calculation list.
  8. Select the task to make into a percentage in the Tasks list.
  9. Click the Include button.
  10. Click on the Save Changes button.

The results converted to a percentage cannot be stored in the same task. The design of SM-Marks Online encourages the keeping of all raw scores so they can be used for possible future calculations without any loss of accuracy.

Generally, all raw scores should be entered as such, and kept in the markbook for reference. Deleting tasks of raw scores that have been used in calculations is not encouraged as it potentially leads to small amounts of inaccuracy due the effects of numbers being rounded internally.
