Generating a single student grade

Generating a single grade from A to E for each can be done with the SM-Marks Online. In this example, it is assumed that you already have a task that has a maximum possible result of 100 and has numerical results for each student in that range. It is also assumed that the result for each student is indicative of each students overall performance in the course.

This second assumption is a big one. See further below for some suggested ways you could use SM-Marks Online to get that single percentage.

By default, SM-Marks Online has the grades A, B, C, D, E set in the Preferences command for use in calculations. Before proceeding, you may want to check that these are the Default grades in that command because it makes the next steps easier. With an open markbook to assign grades based on a single result of each student you can do this.

  1. Choose the Help|Calculation Assistant command.
  2. Click on the Next button.
  3. Select the task that has the numerical results that represent the students overall achievement to select it.
  4. Click on the Next button.
  5. Leave Yes selected and click on the Next button.
  6. Enter the name of the task, for example, Overall Report Grade.
  7. Leave the maximum at 100 and click on the Next button.
  8. Select Assign grades to each student.
  9. Click on the Next button.
  10. Select All students above a Cut-off mark get the same grade.
  11. Click on the Next button.
  12. Leave 5 as the number of grades (if it is not 5, change it) and click on the Next button.
  13. If necessary, edit the rows in the first column to be from A to E, from top to bottom.
  14. In the column next to each grade enter the cut-off for the grade. This means the lowest result a student can have and still get the grade.
  15. Click on the Next button.
  16. Leave Yes selected and click on the Next button.
  17. Review the calculation that has been set. You can use Back button if you need to change anything.
  18. Click on the Finish button.

Now the new task is created with the grades assigned to each student based on their result in the task selected in step 3 and the cut-offs specified in the step 14.

If you don't have a single percentage result, but instead have a set of tasks that already have grades from A to E from set of outcomes and you need to average them to find a single grade, the Averaging grades heading in this section details how you can do this.
