How do I?

Import Outcomes?

The Import Outcomes command reads information from a text file. The outcomes can be entered into a word processor or spreadsheet and checked and then imported with this command by first saving the document as a plain text file. Entering outcomes in this way is more convenient than using the Edit Outcomes command.

There is one format that the command can read. In a spreadsheet it appears as five columns which are the Year, Course, Outcome name, Outcome number and the Outcome. For example:

Year 9,English,Reads,1,Reads a variety of texts with understanding, enjoyment and appreciation

Year 9,English,Writes,2,Writes effectively in a variety of registers

Year 9,English,Listens,3,Listens for meaning and effect to a range of speakers and contexts

A spreadsheet in this format saved as Text (Tab Delimited) or CSV (Comma Delimited) with File, Save as command in MS Excel will import with the Import Outcomes command.

In this example, looking at the first outcome, Reads is the short outcome name. The choice of this is important, as it is the name that appears in the Edit Reports command when the teachers are entering their data. Some schools choose to have generic names such as Outcome 1, Outcome 2, etc.

The year name must match the year as shown in the Edit Years command. The course must match the course as shown in the Edit Courses command.

  • After importing the outcomes, check that they have been imported correctly in the Edit Outcomes command. Select the year and click on the List button for a complete list of outcomes in a format suitable for printing with the Print command of the web browser.
